around Henry, a man coming to terms with his anxiety over the end of the world.
In doing so, he explores this cultural fear's long and complicated history.
Doing the laundry makes Henry think of the apocalypse. But how he got to this is a bit complicated.
From the fiery teachings of the Book of Revelation by a Sunday School teacher, to coping with the innate threat of nuclear war in the 1980s, Henry looks back at his life and how this fear has constantly been reinvented to fit the times. Trying to navigate growing up in this topsy-turvy world, Henry deals with existential threats, a clouded future, and confronting his relationship with death and mortality. As Henry reflects on his life, the film’s historical side will explore how this fear has manifested through time, from religious beliefs to natural disasters to manufactured threats. The focus will be on America’s unique relationship with the end of the world. Since the days of the Puritans and the push for American Exceptionalism, anxiety over the end of days has woven itself into our fabric, permeating everything from our views on politics, entertainment, foreign policy, and even our diet. |
The concept of the end of time is something we all wrestle with, while it may seem more in the territory of religious cults or science fiction films. Through biting satire and philosophical reflection, My Apocalypse will be a collage exploring this ever-changing social anxiety and how we can learn to live through it.
Global warming, the war in Ukraine, and the COVID-19 pandemic: They say that every generation feels it’s living through the end times. Ours is no different. |
